区立図書館から三冊
□スミス『ナショナリズムの生命力』
前回チェックした本。やはりきちんと読みたくて。

□鶴田『ベジタリアンの世界』
歴史的な考察を含めて、肉食との対比を考えたい。

□福田『いかにして日本国はかくもブザマになったか』
そうなの?

もう旧聞に属するニュースだが、批評空間が廃刊になる。編集者の内藤裕治氏の死去で継続の意思をなくしたらしい。柄谷行人の悼辞が掲載されている。これまで意欲的に現代思想を紹介してきた雑誌だけに、残念である。編集者のもつ力の大きさを改めて感じさせられる。

ぼくは本を出すときには、必ず関わった編集者の名前を記載するようにしている。奥付にも名前が記載されない「黒子」役に徹する編集者も多いのだが、本ができるまでの役割は、巨大なものである。ぼくの本でも、編集者がいなくても出したと確信できる本もあるが、編集者なしでは到底生まれなかった本のほうが多いのではないだろうか。ぼくにも亡くして辛い思いが忘れられない編集者がいる。彼のことを思い出しながら、内藤氏に追悼の意をささげる。

【追悼】ジャック・ロラン

レヴィナスの弟子で友人であったジャック・ロランが8月25日に急死した。まだ52歳の若さである。いやはや、なんとも。経歴といい、どうも身につまされる。

レヴィナスの『逃走』に長い序文を書き、レヴィナスの講義録などの多数の書物を編纂し、ドストエフスキー論など、ユニークな業績を残した。すぐれたレヴィナス論の『ノマドの真理』も忘れられない。ヴァッチモの翻訳もしていたらしい。遺著になった浩瀚なレヴィナス論『Parcours de l'autrement』を注文してみよう。

L'ami et le disciple de Levinas



JACQUES ROLLAND, philosophe, est mort dimanche 25 août à l'âge de 52 ans, des suites d'une maladie foudroyante.
Né à Paris, Jacques Rolland suivit un cursus universitaire classique : études de philosophie sous de prestigieuses directions, notamment celle d'Emmanuel Levinas, l'autorité qui ne jugule pas, mais ouvre.

Rolland était comme par nature bibliophile, il devint conservateur à la Bibliothèque nationale. Très vite une passion tactile des textes l'engagea dans des activités d'édition, chez Verdier d'abord, puis au Cerf, où il fonda la collection « La nuit surveillée ». Avec d'autres (Alain David et Francis Wybrands), il créa la revue Exercices de la patience, qui se prolongea pendant un temps dans les magnifiques Cahiers de la nuit surveillée. Très vite aussi, par sa connaissance des langues, il sut donner corps à son goût profond pour l'Italie et à son intérêt toujours plus accentué pour la Russie moderne (dont témoignait déjà son premier livre : Dostoïevski, la question de l'autre, Verdier, 1983).

Plus que tout, Jacques Rolland s'est arrimé à la pensée de Levinas. Il fut l'auditeur, le disciple, l'ami proche. Outre les éditions, préfacées et soigneusement annotées, de nombreux écrits inédits ou introuvables du philosophe, il fut aussi un interprète attentif et rigoureux. Quelques textes font date : La Vérité nomade, en collaboration avec S. Petrosino (La Découverte, 1984), Autrement que savoir (Osiris, 1988), et surtout un épais volume de près de 400 pages, Parcours de l'autrement (PUF, 2000), qui reprend magistralement toute l'oeuvre.

Belvédère de la philosophie

Levinas était le carrefour, le belvédère d'où se voyait l'histoire de la philosophie, la place de Heidegger surtout, et d'où se découvrait l'univers du judaïsme. C'est de ce lieu qu'il se mit ensuite à voir et à essayer de comprendre le phénomène massif du XXe siècle, le totalitarisme, nazi et communiste.

Philosophe, loin de tout académisme, méditant et raffiné, un lecteur étonnant (de Derrida, de Calvin, de saint Paul), un écrivain insolite, toujours sous la garde d'auteurs qui comptaient (Dostoïevski, Pouchkine, Blanchot, Kafka, Baudelaire, Racine même), Jacques Rolland fut aussi un ami, parfois difficile et impatient, comme si réémergeait en lui un continent indocile.

Frankfurt Futura Mundi – Bridges for a World Divided offers open forums for the discussion of significant aspects relevant to the shared future of humankind.

Eminent thinkers and protagonists debate issues of equality and justice within the context of so-called globalisation and its resulting conflicts. A quotation from Abraham Lincoln serves as the motto for this event: »A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand.«

Global markets, technologies, ideas, inventions and discoveries change the way we liveand work more swiftly and dramatically than ever before. Frankfurt Futura Mundi – Bridges for a World Divided aims to analyse and evaluate these forces, giving scope to the widest range of opinions from the spheres of literature, culture, politics, business, science, and religion.

Frankfurt am Main is the ideal location for a forum of this kind. Its unique tradition as an international trading centre as well as an arena for the most disparate of public discourse has been a formative influence on the city to this day. This is apparent in business terms with the presence of the European Central Bank, Germany’s biggest financial institutions as well as the stock market, and in a cultural sense first and foremost with the Frankfurt Book Fair as a platform for freedom of speech and unbiased dialogue between all of the world’s cultures.

In its first year, Frankfurt Futura Mundi – Bridges for a World Divided will focus on the following issues:

1. Defining the Grid: Global Governance and Global Value Systems
2. Global Challenges of Cultural Identities
3. Securing Equality in the Age of Biotechnology
4. Literary Visions for a World Divided

Frankfurt Futura Mundi premieres on 12 October 2002 at the Congress Center of the Fair Frankfurt. Events held as part of the focal theme Bridges for a World Divided will be based in the Forum at the Fair (9 – 14 October 2002).

Frankfurt Futura Mundi is a joint initiative of the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Maleki Group.
